Description
This used 20 South African rand note was introduced by the South African Reserve Bank in 1978. It is a brown and orange note that measures 140 mm x 75 mm and bears the signature of Theunis Willem de Jongh. Its obverse side features a painting of Bartholomeus Vermyuden that was mistaken to be Jan van Riebeeck and a building façade. Its reverse side shows the national coat of arms and three sailing ships: the Drommedaris, the Goede Hoop, and the Reijiger. Though the note does not have a security thread, it has a van Riebeeck watermark.
